## Ready when they can

- Point to Egypt on a map and identify the River Nile running through it
- Explain why the Nile was so important to the ancient Egyptians (water, food, transport)
- Describe how the desert and the river created two very different environments side by side

## Lesson: Egypt and the River Nile

Egypt is a country in Africa. Most of Egypt is hot, dry desert. Few plants can grow in all that sand.

But Egypt has one very special river. It is called the River Nile. The Nile is the longest river in the world.

**Example.** Long ago, people built towns beside the Nile. The river gave them water to drink. Its mud made the soil rich for crops. Boats on the river carried people and food.

**Tip.** On a map, look for green next to blue. Green land sits beside the blue Nile. Past that green strip, the desert begins.

*(drawing: Look down at Egypt from high above. A thin green strip hugs each side of the blue river. Past the green, the sandy desert begins.)*

**Recap.** Egypt is desert land, but the Nile brings water and life.
