Enslaved and colonised people resisted throughout, and abolition was won, not granted. One carries cloth, guns and other goods from Europe to Africa. The second carries enslaved Africans across the Atlantic to the Americas. The third carries sugar, tobacco and cotton back to Europe. That loop is called the triangular trade, and its middle leg shipped about twelve million Africans between the 1500s and the 1800s. Empires grew rich by taking from the lands they ruled. They seized land and mines, taxed farmers, and forced people into mines and plantations for little or no pay. Raw materials sailed home while finished goods sailed back for sale. Follow any fortune in a port city and you find labour an ocean away that was never fairly paid. **Example.** Resistance never stopped. Captives rose against slave ship crews even though the risk was huge. On plantations enslaved people revolted, and abolition campaigns demanded freedom and an end to the trade. Abolition was won by pressure from below, not granted from above. **Tip.** Ending the trade did not end slavery at once, so keep the two separate in your head. Banning the ships left slavery itself legal in many places.
