# Fall of Ancient Egyptian Civilisation

Trace the end of ancient Egyptian civilisation through its successive conquests — Assyrian, Persian, Macedonian (Alexander the Great), and finally Roman — and explain how each conqueror was simultaneously shaped by Egyptian culture; examine Cleopatra VII as the last pharaoh and as a multilingual political strategist; and consider what survives of ancient Egypt in modern culture, religion, and language

## Ready when they can

- Names the main conquerors of Egypt in chronological order (Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians under Alexander, Romans) and gives approximate dates
- Describes Cleopatra VII accurately: not as a romantic icon but as a politically sophisticated ruler who spoke multiple languages and tried to preserve Egyptian independence
- Identifies at least two enduring legacies of ancient Egypt in the modern world (e.g. the Coptic language as a descendant of ancient Egyptian, obelisks in Rome and Paris, Egyptian motifs in Western art and architecture)

## Lesson: The Fall of Ancient Egypt

For nearly three thousand years, Egypt ruled itself under its own pharaohs. That changed in the centuries before the Common Era, when one foreign power after another took control of the Nile valley. Each conqueror wanted Egypt's grain, wealth, and prestige, and each one ended up adopting some of Egypt's culture along the way.

*(drawing: The Assyrians took Egypt around 670 BCE, the Persians in 525 BCE, Alexander's Macedonians in 332 BCE, and finally Rome in 30 BCE.)*

**Example.** Cleopatra VII was the last pharaoh of Egypt, the final ruler in a line that began with Alexander's general Ptolemy. She was known in her own time for being sharp, not just beautiful: she spoke around nine languages, including Egyptian itself, which most of her Greek-speaking family never bothered to learn. She used marriage alliances and skilled diplomacy with Roman leaders to try to keep Egypt independent. When that failed, Rome took over in 30 BCE, and Egypt became a distant province, ruled from Rome rather than by a pharaoh.

**Tip.** Ancient Egypt never really disappeared. The Coptic language spoken in Egyptian churches today grew directly out of the language written on temple walls. Obelisks that once stood outside Egyptian temples were carried off by conquerors and now stand in Rome, Paris, London, and New York. Egyptian motifs still show up in architecture, art, and film today.

**Recap.** Egypt fell to the Assyrians, Persians, Alexander's Macedonians, and finally Rome by 30 BCE, but its language, monuments, and culture live on today.
