# Greek and Roman Legacy Today

Evaluate the lasting contributions of Greek and Roman civilisations to modern life — democracy, law, language (Latin roots), architecture (columns, arches, domes), sport (Olympics), philosophy, literature, and theatre — and understand that Greek ideas reached us through Rome, and then through later European civilisations, in a chain of cultural transmission

## Ready when they can

- List at least five ways ancient Greece and Rome still influence modern life
- Explain how Greek culture spread to Rome and then from Rome across Europe
- Give a specific modern example of a Greek or Roman legacy such as democratic voting or architectural columns

## Lesson: What the Greeks and Romans Left Us

Ancient Greece and Rome ended thousands of years ago. But you can still see their fingerprints today. Their ideas live on in how people vote, the words we speak, the buildings we visit with their tall Greek columns, the sports we watch, and the plays and stories we tell.

*(drawing: Greek ideas traveled to Rome first. Then they spread across Europe. Eventually, they reached us.)*

**Example.** The word democracy comes from Greek words meaning rule by the people. In ancient Athens, citizens gathered to vote on their own laws. Today, many countries still vote to choose their leaders.

**Example.** The modern Olympic Games began in 1896, but the idea is much older. Ancient Greeks held games every four years in the city of Olympia, with running races and wrestling matches.

**Tip.** When you notice a word that sounds Latin, a building with tall columns, or people voting for a leader, ask yourself where that idea began. Often, the answer is ancient Greece or Rome.

**Recap.** Greek ideas traveled to Rome and then across Europe, and pieces of them, like voting, sports, and buildings, are still part of your life today.
