# Greek Gods with Roman Names

Understand that the Romans adopted the Greek gods but gave them new names — Zeus became Jupiter, Hera became Juno, Ares became Mars, Athena became Minerva, Poseidon became Neptune, Aphrodite became Venus — and that this shows how deeply Rome was influenced by Greek culture

## Ready when they can

- Match at least four Greek gods to their Roman names
- Explain that the Romans took Greek gods and gave them Latin names
- Say that this borrowing shows Rome was strongly influenced by Greek culture

## Lesson: Same Gods, New Names

Long ago, Rome grew into a huge empire and took over Greek lands. The Romans loved Greek stories, art, and gods so much that they kept the same gods for themselves. But since the Romans spoke Latin, not Greek, they gave each god a brand new name.

**Example.** Zeus was the king of the Greek gods, ruler of the sky and thunder. The Romans kept this exact same god, but called him Jupiter instead. Same god, same job, just a new name.

The Romans renamed many Greek gods this way. Hera, queen of the gods, became Juno. Ares, god of war, became Mars. Athena, goddess of wisdom, became Minerva. Poseidon, god of the sea, became Neptune. Aphrodite, goddess of love, became Venus.

*(drawing: The big rename list: six gods side by side with their new Roman names. Say each pair out loud.)*

**Tip.** Here is a trick to remember: the planets in the night sky use the Roman names, not the Greek ones. That is why we call them Jupiter, Mars, Neptune, and Venus.

**Recap.** The Romans borrowed the Greek gods and gave them Latin names, which shows how deeply Greek culture shaped Rome.
