Then Chandragupta Maurya joined them into one empire, and his grandson Ashoka made it huge. After the bloody Kalinga war in 260 BCE, Ashoka turned away from killing and ruled with kindness. He cut his laws on rocks and pillars so all could see them. **Example.** Look at the digits you write each day. The decimal numerals, with zero as a number, were worked out in India, and the world still uses them. Under the later Gupta kings, scholars pushed further: Aryabhata worked out a close value for pi. Their courts filled with poets, sums and star lore. India also faced outward. Ships tied its ports to Arabia and Southeast Asia, trading goods both ways. Travelling monks carried Buddhism out of India across Asia, and the faith changed everywhere it settled. Sea lanes and faith lines both linked India to its neighbours. **Tip.** Do not mix up the two empires. The Mauryas built the big first empire, with taxes, clerks and written orders. The Guptas came centuries later and ran a famed age of arts and learning.
