## Ready when they can

- Explain what a ruling medieval king or queen could do (rule a kingdom, make laws, lead armies and collect taxes)
- Describe at least one symbol of royal power (crown, throne, sceptre)
- Name one famous medieval monarch or describe the Tower of London's role

## Lesson: What Kings and Queens Really Did

Castles could be homes for kings and queens. A king ruled a kingdom. Some queens ruled kingdoms too; others were married to kings. Rulers made laws, or rules for the land. They could lead armies and collect taxes, money from the people, to pay for soldiers.

A crown is worn on the head. A throne is a special seat. A sceptre is a special stick. These were signs of royal power.

The Tower of London is a stone fort in England. Medieval kings kept treasure there. They also locked up prisoners, including people they saw as enemies.

**Example.** King Richard the Lionheart ruled long ago in medieval England. He led his army into battle. He wore a crown and sat on a throne. He made laws for his kingdom.

**Tip.** A crown shows royal power. It does not tell us whether a ruler treated people fairly.

**Recap.** Kings and queens ruled the land, made laws, and used crowns, thrones, and forts to show their power.
