## Ready when they can

- Name at least three things from the Middle Ages that still affect our lives today
- Explain how the English language was shaped by Anglo-Saxon and Norman French
- Give a reason why people today are still fascinated by the medieval period (castles, knights, fantasy literature, games)

## Lesson: What the Middle Ages Gave Us

The Middle Ages ended hundreds of years ago, but you use things from it every single day. Look closely and you will find the medieval world hiding inside your own life.

**Example.** You already learned how Magna Carta made the king follow rules. That idea grew into Parliament, where people meet to make the country's laws. Judges started common law by following what earlier judges had decided, and universities like Oxford and Cambridge opened their doors to students. All of these still exist today.

*(drawing: English mixed together over time: Anglo-Saxon words, then Norman French after 1066, and both together in the English we speak now.)*

**Example.** After 1066, Norman French mixed with Anglo-Saxon English. Farmers used the old word cow, but the French-speaking lords who ate the meat called it beef. That is why English still has two words for so many things.

**Tip.** Gothic cathedrals with tall towers and pointed arches still stand in many cities, and towns with names ending in -ton or -bury go back to medieval villages. Even surnames like Smith or Baker come from medieval jobs. No wonder castles, knights, and quests still fill books, games, and movies today.

**Recap.** The Middle Ages gave us Parliament, common law, universities, our mixed-up English words, and the buildings, names, and stories we still enjoy today.
