## Lesson: Medieval Worlds Beyond Europe

During the Middle Ages, other parts of the world were just as busy as Europe. In the Islamic world, in West Africa, and in China, people built great cities, discovered new ideas, and traded across huge distances.

**Example.** In cities like Baghdad, Muslim scholars studied math, medicine, and building design for hundreds of years. They developed algebra, a way of solving problems using letters and numbers. They built hospitals that treated patients for free and trained new doctors. They also built stunning mosques and libraries, and some still stand today.

**Example.** Mansa Musa ruled the Mali Empire in West Africa in the 1300s. His kingdom controlled valuable gold and salt trade routes, making him one of the richest people who has ever lived. When he travelled to Mecca, he gave away so much gold that its value dropped in the cities he passed through. People remember him for his wealth and for making Mali famous across the world.

*(drawing: Goods and ideas travelled step by step along the Silk Road, from China all the way to Europe.)*

**Tip.** Far to the east, Song Dynasty China was inventing paper money and better ways to print books. None of these civilisations worked alone. Traders carried silk, spices, paper, and ideas along the Silk Road. The Silk Road was not one single road but a network of many routes, tying distant peoples into one connected medieval world.

**Recap.** Beyond Europe, the Islamic world, Mali, and China all thrived, and trade routes like the Silk Road tied them together.
