# Ming and Qing China

China under the Ming and early Qing was the largest economy on Earth and the destination for most of the silver mined in the Americas. It traded on its own terms, which is a different story from the one that starts with European ships.

## Ready when they can

- Explain why so much American silver ended up in China, using what China taxed and what it sold
- Say what Zheng He's voyages showed about Chinese capability, and what the decision to stop them tells you about priorities
- Assess the claim that China was closed to the outside world before 1800

## Lesson: Why the world's silver flowed to China

China under the Ming, from the 1300s to 1600s, and the Qing, from the 1600s to 1900s, was the largest economy on Earth. It sold tea, silk, and porcelain the world wanted, and it taxed trade and land in silver. Buyers had to pay in silver, so metal mined in the Americas sailed across the Pacific into Chinese vaults.

**Example.** Zheng He was a Muslim admiral who led seven great voyages from 1405 to 1433, with ships far larger than anything Europe could float. His fleets crossed the Indian Ocean to Arabia and East Africa, showing power and collecting tribute. The voyages proved China could sail further than anyone.

Then the court stopped the fleets. That choice tells you about priorities: frontier wars, canals, and order at home mattered more than sea power. Capability stayed, but the court spent it guarding northern borders instead of funding ocean fleets.

**Tip.** Do not call China closed before 1800. Foreign ships traded at Canton under licensed merchants, missionaries debated at court, and new crops like maize and sweet potatoes spread inland. The Qing restricted uncontrolled contact, but they taxed and supervised plenty of it through official channels.

**Recap.** Goods the world wanted plus taxes in silver pulled American metal to China.
