# Modern Archaeology and Egyptian Ethics

Understand that modern Egyptologists use advanced technologies — CT scanning of mummies, satellite imagery to find buried structures, DNA analysis — alongside traditional excavation, and think critically about the ethics of archaeology: whether mummies should be displayed in museums, who owns ancient artefacts, and how colonial-era collecting affects how we study and present ancient Egypt today

## Lesson: Modern Archaeology and Egyptian Ethics

Archaeologists still dig in the sand, just like before. But today they also use tools that let them see things no shovel ever could. A CT scanner takes pictures inside a mummy's body without removing a single bandage. Satellite cameras spot the shape of buried walls from far above the ground. DNA tests can show whether two mummies were related.

**Example.** When scientists ran a CT scan on Tutankhamun's mummy, they found he had broken his leg shortly before he died, all without unwrapping any of the linen around him. A DNA test on his mummy also showed who his parents were.

These discoveries raise new questions. Is it right to put someone's actual body on display in a museum for visitors to look at? And many ancient Egyptian objects, like the Rosetta Stone, sit in museums outside Egypt today, often because they were taken during colonial times without asking Egypt fairly. Who should own them now?

**Tip.** There is no single correct answer to these questions. How we study and display ancient Egypt depends on our own values, not just on facts, so thoughtful people can disagree.
