## Ready when they can

- Explain what the printing press was and why it was revolutionary
- Describe William Caxton's role in bringing printing to England
- Give at least one way printed books changed society (more people could read, ideas spread faster)

## Lesson: The Printing Press and the Dawn of the Renaissance

Imagine every book had to be copied out by hand, letter by letter, with a pen. That is how it worked for hundreds of years. Monks spent months writing out a single book, so books were rare and cost a fortune. Only kings, churches, and the richest families owned one.

Around 1440, a German craftsman named Johannes Gutenberg changed that. He built a printing press with small metal letters you could arrange, ink, and press onto paper again and again. One press could print hundreds of pages in the time it once took to copy a single page by hand.

*(drawing: Follow the steps from hand-copied books to printed books everywhere.)*

**Example.** William Caxton learned about printing while working in Europe. In 1476, he brought a printing press to England and set it up near London. He printed books in English, so people who could not read Latin could finally read them too.

**Tip.** When a job goes from taking months to taking days, far more people can have what it makes. That is exactly what happened to books once the printing press arrived.

**Recap.** The printing press made books fast and cheap to produce, so reading and new ideas spread across Europe faster than ever before.
