# Pyramids and the Great Sphinx

## Lesson: Pyramids and the Great Sphinx

Pharaohs ruled ancient Egypt. When a pharaoh died, Egyptians built him a tomb. The tomb kept his body safe. They believed he needed it for the afterlife.

**Example.** The Great Pyramid stands at Giza. It is one of the biggest buildings ever built. It is very old, but it still stands today. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the world.

Near the pyramids sits the Great Sphinx. It is a giant stone statue. It has a lion's body and a human head. The Sphinx guards the pyramids.

**Tip.** You can still visit the pyramids and the Sphinx today. They have stood in Egypt for thousands of years.
