## Ready when they can

- Describe a Roman legion as a large unit of highly trained, disciplined soldiers
- Explain that Julius Caesar raided Britain first and Claudius conquered it later
- Give at least one reason why the Romans invaded Britain

## Lesson: The Roman Army and the Conquest of Britain

Rome's soldiers fought together in a huge group called a legion. A legion held about 5,000 men, and every one of them trained for years. They marched, built camps, and fought as one tight team, which made the Roman army very hard to beat.

*(drawing: First Caesar raided Britain. Almost 100 years later, Claudius came back and conquered it for good.)*

**Example.** Imagine you help Emperor Claudius decide. You tell him: Britain has rich farmland, metals like tin and lead, and people who pay taxes to Rome. If you conquer it, people will remember your name. That mix of land, resources, taxes, and glory is why Claudius invaded in AD 43.

**Tip.** Winning wasn't only about brave fighting. Years of drill and following orders without hesitation are what let a legion beat much bigger armies.

**Recap.** Roman legions were large, disciplined armies; Caesar raided Britain first in 55 BC, and Claudius conquered it in AD 43 for land, resources, taxes, and glory.
