# Roman Britain and What It Left

Four centuries of Roman rule left roads, walls, towns and Latin place names, and then the province was let go. What survived the Romans leaving says as much as what they built.

## Lesson: What Rome left behind in Britain

Rome ruled Britain for nearly 400 years. Emperor Claudius sent his legions in 43 AD. They built towns, forts, baths and long straight roads. One town was Londinium, which is London today.

**Example.** You can still walk a Roman road today. A dead straight country lane in England may follow the old Roman line. Town sites, walls, Latin names like Chester and objects in museums near you are traces too.

The legions left Britain around 410 AD. Towns shrank and grand villas fell empty. With the soldiers gone, their pay stopped coming, trade faded and skills like making roof tiles were lost. Without pay, trade and repairs, towns could not stay grand.

**Tip.** Hunt for one Roman trace near where you live. Look for a straight road, a name ending in chester or cester, a wall or a museum object. Write down what you found and where you found it.
