## Ready when they can

- Retell the story of a significant person from the past (e.g., Rosa Parks or Neil Armstrong) and say what they did that mattered
- Explain what was difficult or risky for a person in their own time, such as walking on the Moon when nobody had walked there before
- Compare two figures from different eras (e.g., a queen from Tudor times and one from Victorian times) and point out how life changed between them

## Lesson: People from the past who changed things

We study people whose actions changed other people's lives. Some changes helped people; others caused harm. Ask what they did, why it mattered and who helped.

Rosa Parks was a Black woman in the United States. Unfair bus rules treated Black passengers differently from white passengers. A driver ordered her to give up her seat. She refused and was arrested. Refusing could bring punishment. Many people stopped riding buses in protest. Parks and others helped end unfair seating rules.

In 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon. Buzz Aldrin walked there after him. Nobody had walked there before their trip. Space travel was risky, so the astronauts trained for it. Other astronauts and teams on Earth helped make the trip possible.

Elizabeth I was a queen in Tudor times. Victoria was a queen in Victorian times, much later. Elizabeth I lived before steam trains and telephones were invented. People could travel by steam train in Victoria's time. Telephones were also invented during her rule. Comparing their times helps us see changes in travel and talking over long distances.

**Recap.** Ask what a person did, why it mattered and who helped. Compare their time with other times.
