# The Cold War

## Lesson: Enemies who never fought

After 1945 the United States and the Soviet Union stood as rival superpowers with rival systems. They armed against each other, built alliances, and competed everywhere except on a direct battlefield. Cold means hostile but not openly at war, and the standoff lasted about forty years.

Europe split into blocs, with a divided Germany at the fault line and distrust on both sides. The real shooting happened elsewhere: Korea and Vietnam turned cold rivalry into hot wars that killed millions, and newly free countries were courted, armed, and pressured by both camps.

**Example.** In 1962 Soviet missiles in Cuba put American cities minutes from nuclear strike. President Kennedy blockaded the island while secret letters went back and forth, and for thirteen days the world waited. A deal ended it: missiles out of Cuba for an American pledge plus quiet removal of missiles from Turkey.

**Tip.** Nuclear weapons capped how far either side dared to push, because direct war could mean mutual ruin. That ceiling is why crises were managed short of the edge, and the fright of 1962 taught both sides to build hotlines and treaties.
