## Ready when they can

- Explain in simple terms why European armies travelled to the Holy Land
- Describe one example of trade or learning between Europe and the Islamic world, and explain that these contacts also happened outside the Crusades
- Acknowledge that the Crusades involved violence and suffering on both sides

## Lesson: The Crusades

The Pope was the leader of the Catholic Church. In 1095, the Pope called on Christians in Europe to fight in the Holy Land. One goal was to take Jerusalem from Muslim rulers. Jerusalem is holy to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Knights and other people joined the armies. These campaigns were part of the Crusades. Not every Crusade fought over Jerusalem.

Scholars in the Islamic world studied medicine, maths, and the stars. European readers learned from some of their writings through translations. Translating means putting words into another language. Trade, travel, and learning linked these regions before and during the Crusades. The wars were not the only way ideas moved.

Sugar was one of the goods traded from the eastern Mediterranean to Europe. A trader could carry goods across the sea to sell them. A buyer did not need to fight in a Crusade to get those goods. Trade helps explain how people encountered products from other places.

The Crusades caused violence and suffering. Christian and Muslim soldiers were killed or injured. People who were not fighting also lost homes or lives. Jewish communities were attacked too. Contact between people does not make a war peaceful. We can study trade and learning while remembering the harm caused by the fighting.

**Recap.** The Crusades were wars that caused suffering. Trade, travel, and translated writings also linked Europe and the Islamic world, before and during the wars.
