# The Enlightenment and the Age of Revolutions

A set of arguments about reason, rights and consent moved from coffee houses into constitutions, in America, France and Haiti within twenty-five years. Each revolution had to decide who counted as the people, and gave a different answer.

## Ready when they can

- State two Enlightenment claims about government and name a thinker associated with each
- Compare what the American, French and Haitian revolutions each meant by equality
- Explain why the Haitian revolution was the one that took the stated principles furthest, and why it was punished for it

## Lesson: Same liberty, three different answers

Enlightenment writers argued that government should rest on reason and the consent of the governed, not on birth or divine right. Locke claimed rulers need consent, and Montesquieu sketched splitting power so no one person holds it all. Salons, pamphlets, and coffee houses carried these claims far beyond universities.

The arguments travelled into constitutions. Pamphlets printed in one port were debated in another within weeks, and sailors, soldiers, and enslaved people carried news faster than governments liked. Historians call these linked upheavals the Atlantic Revolutions, since an argument made in one place was answered in another.

**Example.** Within twenty five years three revolutions used the same words about liberty and gave three answers. America broke from Britain but kept slavery. France declared the rights of man, then lurched from republic to terror to empire. Haiti ended slavery and founded an independent Black state.

Haiti took the stated principles furthest by applying liberty to enslaved people, and it was punished for it. France and other powers isolated the new Black republic. Each revolution had to decide who counted as the people, and the narrow answers reveal the limits of the wider words.

**Recap.** One language of liberty produced three answers about who counted as the people.
