## Lesson: How one killing lit a world war

In June 1914 a Serbian student shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. Austria-Hungary, backed by Germany, faced Serbia, backed by Russia, with France and Britain tied in by treaty. Each mobilisation forced the next, so a Balkan crisis became a continental war within weeks.

Trench lines then barely moved for years because defence beat attack. Barbed wire, machine guns and rapid shells shredded anyone crossing open ground. Railways fed endless shells to the front while tactics lagged behind the weapons, so big pushes bought yards of mud for thousands of lives.

**Example.** Far from the trenches, you would have felt the war at home. Your food would be rationed, prices fixed, and posters everywhere. Men were conscripted, and women moved into munitions works, buses and offices. Bread queues and grief turned streets political, and the side whose society held out longest won.

**Tip.** Watch what the 1919 peace got wrong. It blamed Germany and loaded it with reparations, and that resentment and hardship stored up trouble for the next twenty years. Remember too that colonies sent soldiers, labourers and materials, so the bills landed far beyond Europe.
