# The Industrial Revolution

How coal, steam and the factory changed where people worked, where they lived and how fast goods could be made, first in Britain and then across much of the world. The same century that raised output also produced the factory town and its costs.

## Lesson: Coal, steam, and the factory

Coal, steam, and the factory moved work out of homes and fields and into mills. Machines set the pace now, with shifts and clock discipline replacing sun and season. Britain led first, with coal, trade wealth, tinkerers, and lenders close together.

**Example.** Name the machines and the hands they replaced. The power loom took the work of hand weavers, the spinning mule took the work of hand spinners, and jennies and flying shuttles multiplied output further. Each answer needs both halves: the machine and the worker it replaced.

Weigh the costs beside the output. Children laboured long hours, twelve-hour shifts drained adults, and crowded towns without drains bred sickness. Railways changed prices too, not only journey times, since cheap bulk transport cut what coal, grain, and goods cost per mile.

**Tip.** Explain why change ran so fast: buried ancient forests gave coal, engines turned it into work, and trade spread the pattern worldwide. Output rose, towns swelled, and ordinary life shifted more in a century than in the thousand years before.
