# The Non-Aligned World

After 1955 a group of newly independent states refused to line up behind either superpower and tried to act together on trade, aid and racism. The Cold War read from Bandung or Belgrade looks nothing like the Cold War read from Washington or Moscow.

## Lesson: Staying out of both camps

In 1955 Asian and African chiefs met at Bandung. They faced empire and bias, and claimed a voice outside the two blocs. Later talks at Belgrade built the Non-Aligned Movement.

**Example.** Nehru, Nasser, and Tito gave the bloc its public face. For a small fresh state this was practical. It could court both paymasters and speak in world halls as a bloc, not alone.

Read the Cold War from the south and the tale shifts. Far giants talked rockets, while fresh capitals feared borders, crop costs, and guns next door. Picking a side bought arms and cash but cost bases, votes, and troth.

**Tip.** The shared stage pushed freedom and fair trade onto the world slate. Still, bills and gun deals dragged members toward giants, and rows split the group. Each state still faced its own bounds and debts.
