# The Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal Empires

Three large Muslim states ran most of the land between the Danube and the Bay of Bengal from the sixteenth century, each built on cannon, cavalry and a paid bureaucracy. They were the powers European traders had to negotiate with, not around.

## Ready when they can

- Place all three empires on a map and give the approximate century each was at its height
- Explain what gunpowder artillery changed about who could hold a fortified city, and therefore about the size of states
- Describe how one of the three managed a population of several religions, and judge how well it worked

## Lesson: Three empires built on cannon

Place all three on a map. The Ottomans were at their height in the 1400s to 1500s, reaching out under Suleiman in the 1500s. The Safavids ruled Persia in the 1500s to 1600s. The Mughals ruled most of India in the 1500s to 1600s. European traders in 1600 met them as supplicants, not rulers.

Big guns changed who could hold a fortified city. At Constantinople in 1453 huge cannon smashed walls that had stood for a thousand years. Rulers who could afford artillery swallowed neighbours and held wider lands. Muskets did the same work on battlefields, letting drilled infantry beat proud cavalry.

**Example.** The Ottomans governed millions of Christians and Jews by taxing non-Muslim communities while letting them keep their worship, leaders, and courts. The system brought long peace and full treasuries. Shah Abbas of the Safavids instead gave Persia one official faith, which sharpened identity but guaranteed quarrels with Sunni neighbours.

Akbar of the Mughals ruled a Hindu majority, so managing faith was survival. He removed a hated tax on non-Muslims, married into local royal families, and hired able officers of every creed. Revenues rose and revolts faded. Later rulers who reversed course faced revolts and lost land.

**Recap.** Cannon built three wide empires; tolerance decided how long each held together.
