# The Pharaoh as Living God

Understand that the pharaoh was not just a ruler but was believed to be a living god — the intermediary between the gods and the people — and that the concept of Ma'at (truth, justice, and cosmic order) guided Egyptian law and government, with viziers and officials administering the kingdom on the pharaoh's behalf

## Lesson: The Pharaoh: Egypt's Living God

In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh was not only the ruler of the land. Egyptians believed the pharaoh was also a living god on Earth, the link between the people and the many gods they worshipped, like Ra and Horus. This gave the pharaoh's word enormous power, since it was believed to carry the will of the gods themselves.

The pharaoh's first duty was to protect Ma'at, the truth, justice, and order that Egyptians believed held the whole world together. If Ma'at was ignored, they believed chaos could spread across the land, so laws and government decisions were built around keeping it strong.

*(drawing: The pharaoh set the direction. A vizier and other officials carried his decisions down to the people.)*

The pharaoh could not judge every case himself, so he shared the work. A vizier, his highest official, spoke and acted in his name, and other officials served under the vizier. Orders travelled down that chain, from pharaoh to vizier to officials to the people. A vizier's power came from the pharaoh, so the final word stayed with the pharaoh.

**Example.** Two farmers argue over how much water each one gets from the Nile. They do not travel to see the pharaoh. Instead, a vizier, one of the pharaoh's top officials, listens to both sides and settles the case using the principles of Ma'at.

**Tip.** A simple way to remember it: the pharaoh was believed to rule as a god, Ma'at was the rulebook for fairness, and viziers were the officials who made sure that rulebook was followed every day.

**Recap.** Egyptians believed the pharaoh ruled as a living god whose duty was to protect Ma'at, while viziers and officials handled the daily work.
