## Ready when they can

- Explain how the 1930s depression and the 1919 settlement helped dictators take power
- Name the main sides and say roughly when the fighting began and ended in Europe and in Asia
- Give one reason civilians died in far greater numbers than in the previous war
- Say what the war changed about the map and about who held power in 1945

## Lesson: The war that came back

You can read 1914 to 1945 as one long era of war with a twenty-year pause in the middle. The Great War ran from 1914 to 1918, and the 1919 peace punished Germany hard and left deep anger behind. Only twenty years later, a second and wider war broke out.

The harsh 1919 terms plus the money troubles of the 1930s depression left many countries angry, broke, and hunting for someone to blame. Dictators used that mood to grab power, promising to restore national pride. Germany, Italy, and Japan then faced Britain, the Soviet Union, the United States, and their allies.

**Example.** Follow the dates on a map. Europe fought from 1939 to 1945, while Asia fought from 1937 in China and across the Pacific from 1941, ending in 1945 too. Civilians died in far greater numbers than before, through bombing of cities, sieges, famine, and mass murder that reached far behind any front line.

**Tip.** When the guns stopped in 1945, the map and the power balance had both changed. Germany and Japan lay defeated, while the United States and the Soviet Union stood as rival superpowers. If you remember anger plus depression plus dictators, you hold the chain that links the two wars.

**Recap.** A punishing peace plus depression fed dictators, and the wider war they started ended with two new superpowers.
