# The Victorian City

Within two generations Britain went from mostly rural to mostly urban, and the new cities were built faster than anyone could drain them. Cholera, and the surveys that followed it, are what produced sewers, clean water and the first public health law.

## Lesson: Why sick cities learned to count

Within two generations Britain went from mostly rural to mostly urban. People kept arriving because farm work paid little, machines took country jobs, and mills promised steady wages. Whole families squeezed into two rooms near the works, though streets ran with waste. Hard life, yet the city's pull beat the farm's push.

Cities were built faster than anyone could drain them. Dirty water and packed rooms let cholera and typhus race house to house. The answer was public works: sewers to carry waste away, pipes to bring clean water in, plus rubbish collection and building rules. Slowly the sick city turned healthier.

**Example.** Meet John Snow, a London doctor with a map. He marked each cholera death street by street and saw the marks crowd around one shared water pump. When the pump handle came off, new cases stopped. Dirty water, not bad air, carried the killer. One map beat a hundred guesses.

**Tip.** See the bigger shift. Counting and mapping deaths showed disease struck where water was foul and houses packed. That proof told leaders sewers and clean water were worth paying for. Mapping turned health from private bad luck into a public job, paid from shared funds.
