## Ready when they can

- Describe how medieval towns were different from villages (markets, walls, guilds, more people)
- Explain what a guild was and why it mattered for tradespeople
- Describe one way towns changed medieval society (new merchant class, more freedom for townspeople)

## Lesson: How Villages Grew Into Towns

Most people in medieval times lived in small villages. They farmed the land and followed the rules of a lord. Some villages grew much bigger over time. They became towns, with a market, walls, and many kinds of workers living close together.

*(drawing: A village stayed small. A town, built around a busy market, drew in far more people to live and work.)*

At the market, people bought and sold food, cloth, tools, and more. Workers who shared the same trade, like bakers or weavers, formed a group called a guild. A guild agreed on rules: how to train new workers, how good the work had to be, and what price was fair.

**Example.** Elena wanted to become a weaver in her town. She joined the weavers' guild. The guild taught her how to weave cloth the right way and made sure she charged the same fair price as every other weaver.

**Tip.** Some towns grew so busy and important that a king or lord gave them a charter, a written promise letting the town govern itself. Townspeople could elect their own leaders and hold their own courts, something villagers under a lord could not do.

**Recap.** Towns grew around markets and guilds, and some earned the right to govern themselves.
