## Ready when they can

- Say what Henry VIII wanted from the Pope and what he did when refused
- Name one thing the crown gained when the monasteries were dissolved
- Explain why a change of religion at the top was dangerous for ordinary people

## Lesson: Henry VIII and the break with Rome

For a thousand years most Christians in western Europe obeyed one church, led by the Pope in Rome. Then a German monk named Martin Luther said the church had gone wrong. His ideas raced across Europe on the new printing press.

England's break came from the top. King Henry VIII wanted the Pope to end his marriage. When the Pope refused, Henry declared himself head of the English church instead.

**Example.** Before the split, monasteries owned vast lands and the church took a tenth of everyone's produce. When Henry closed the monasteries, their lands, gold plates and rents flowed to the crown. He sold much of it to nobles, winning loyal landowners.

Each new ruler changed the rules. Henry made the break, his son pushed further, his daughter Mary punished Protestants harshly, and Elizabeth settled on a middle path. Backing the wrong side could cost your job, your home or your life.

**Recap.** Henry broke with Rome over his marriage, the crown grew rich on monastery land, and ordinary people faced danger as each ruler changed the rules.
