# Upper and Lower Egypt

Understand that ancient Egypt was divided into Upper Egypt (the narrow river valley in the south) and Lower Egypt (the wide delta in the north), that the two lands were united under one pharaoh, and that Egyptians managed the Nile's water through irrigation canals and shadufs to grow crops year-round

## Ready when they can

- Identify Upper and Lower Egypt on a map and explain why they had different landscapes
- Describe how irrigation tools like shadufs and canals helped farmers water their fields
- Explain that uniting the two lands was an important achievement of the early pharaohs

## Lesson: Upper and Lower Egypt

Long ago, Egypt was really two lands joined into one. Upper Egypt was in the south, where the Nile ran through a narrow strip of green squeezed between two deserts. Lower Egypt was in the north, where the river spread out into a wide, flat delta before it reached the sea.

**Tip.** Here is a tricky part: Upper Egypt is actually in the south, not the top of a map. It is called upper because the Nile's water starts high in the south and flows down to the sea in the north, where Lower Egypt sits.

*(drawing: The Nile begins in the south at Upper Egypt and flows north until it fans out into the wide delta of Lower Egypt.)*

**Example.** Think about a farmer named Amara who lives near the Nile. When the river isn't flooding, her fields far from the bank would dry out. So she uses a shaduf, a pole with a bucket and a heavy weight, to lift water up from a canal. The canal carries river water right to her crops, so they can grow even between floods.

Long ago, one Egyptian king brought Upper and Lower Egypt together under his rule. He wore a special crown made of two crowns joined as one, to show that he now ruled both lands. Ancient Egyptians remembered this as one of the greatest achievements of their earliest pharaohs.

**Recap.** Egypt was once two lands, a narrow valley in the south and a wide delta in the north, joined into one kingdom, with canals and shadufs bringing the Nile's water to fields all year.
