# Votes for Women and the Long Fight for the Ballot

Britain went from a vote held by a small minority of men to a vote held by nearly every adult in about a century, and no stage of it was given freely. The campaign for women's suffrage split over whether to petition or to break windows.

## Lesson: Votes for Women and the Long Fight

Around 1830 only a small group of wealthy men could vote in Britain. By 1930 nearly every adult could, and no step of that road came free.

**Example.** Peaceful campaigners petitioned Parliament and held calm marches. Militant campaigners broke windows and went to prison, saying polite asks had failed for fifty years.

Opponents said politics would harm homes, or that women did not need the vote. Campaigners answered that women paid taxes and obeyed laws, so they should help choose the lawmakers.

**Tip.** Change took a century because each gain had to be won twice: first in argument, then in law.

**Recap.** The vote widened from a few men to nearly all adults because campaigners kept pushing, peaceful and militant in turn.
