## Ready when they can

- Name at least four parts of a castle (tower, moat, drawbridge, walls, gatehouse)
- Explain that castles were both homes and defences
- Describe why someone in medieval times would need a castle

## Lesson: What is a castle?

A castle is a strong building. A king or lord lived there. It was a home and a safe place too.

Long ago, enemies could attack a village. A castle kept people safe inside its thick stone walls, which were hard to break. A moat, a deep ditch often filled with water, was hard to cross. A drawbridge could go down to let people cross and up to stop enemies. Building on a hill made it harder to climb.

*(drawing: Many castles have parts like tower, wall, moat, drawbridge and gatehouse.)*

**Example.** Ben points to a castle's moat and tower. Towers helped guards spot enemies far away. Moats made the walls harder to reach.

**Tip.** Look at a castle picture. Try to spot the moat and the tower.

**Recap.** A castle was a home and a fort that kept people safe.
