# Who Really Built the Pyramids

Analyse who built the pyramids and why, evaluating the evidence against the alien-builder myth and the slave-labour myth: archaeological evidence from worker villages at Giza shows a paid, skilled, well-fed workforce; discuss the social functions of monument building as a form of state organisation, religious duty, and employment; and assess the current controversy over newly discovered construction ramps and logistics

## Ready when they can

- Cites at least three pieces of archaeological evidence from Giza that point to an organised, skilled, fed workforce rather than slaves or aliens (e.g. worker villages, bakery remains, graffiti tags, medical care)
- Explains why the alien hypothesis fails to meet the standards of historical evidence and what the burden of proof in history requires
- Evaluates at least two proposed explanations for ramp logistics and describes which is currently supported by the most evidence

## Lesson: Who Really Built the Pyramids

For a long time, two myths tried to explain who built the pyramids. One says aliens did it, because ancient Egyptians could not have managed alone. The other says enslaved people did it under the whip. When you weigh these claims like a historian, you look for real evidence and see which claim it actually fits.

*(drawing: An ancient Greek writer guessed 100,000 workers. The worker village at Giza points to about 20,000 instead.)*

**Example.** In the 1990s, archaeologists dug next to the pyramids and found a whole town: bakeries that could bake thousands of loaves a day, tools for treating broken bones, and a cemetery where workers were buried with honour, close to the pyramids they built. Stone blocks even carry graffiti naming work gangs, like 'Friends of Khufu.' None of this fits a slave story, and none of it needs aliens.

**Tip.** A gap in our knowledge is never proof of anything. It just means archaeologists have more to learn, like exactly how workers raised the stones. Two ideas compete here: one giant ramp, or shorter ramps combined with stairways and wooden posts. A ramp found at a nearby quarry in 2018, with its stairways and postholes still in place, currently gives the strongest support for the ramp-and-stairway idea, though the very top of the Great Pyramid is still debated.

**Recap.** Evidence points to paid, fed, organised workers, not slaves or aliens, and a gap in our knowledge is never proof of a wild guess.
