# Why Empires Fall

Rome, Han China, the Maya cities and the Egyptian New Kingdom all ended, and the explanations repeat: overstretch, disease, climate, a broken succession, a frontier that stops paying. Comparing cases is how you tell a cause from a story.

## Ready when they can

- Name three causes that turn up in more than one collapse
- Take two empires and say what their endings had in common and where they differ
- Explain why a single dramatic event is rarely enough on its own to explain a collapse

## Lesson: Why Empires Fall

Rome, Han China, the Maya cities, and the Egyptian New Kingdom all fell. The same causes repeat: lands stretched too far, sickness, bad harvests, fights over who rules next, and borders that cost more than they earn.

**Example.** Songhai grew vast, then rebellions, invasions from the north, civil war, and weak trade income wore it down. No single blow ended it; troubles piled until the state could not answer them all.

Compare two endings to find what matches and what differs. Rome split under its own weight while Han China broke in revolts, yet both faced costly frontiers and hungry years. Shared causes teach more than single stories. Maya power sat in many cities while Rome ruled as one state, so compare their shapes of rule too.

**Tip.** One dramatic battle never explains a fall alone. Ask what was already weak before the last blow landed.

**Recap.** Empires fall when many strains pile up, so compare cases instead of blaming one event.
