# Asking For What You Need

Get through a real exchange on a small stock of words: ask for something, ask a price or a direction, and say you did not follow and need it again. The phrases that keep an exchange alive matter more here than correct grammar.

## Ready when they can

- Ask for something they need in the new language and act on the answer
- Say they did not understand and ask for repetition or slower speech
- Keep going with a gesture or a simpler word when the exact word is missing

## Lesson: Ask, and keep the talk alive

Pack a pocket of key phrases. Hello, please, thank you, where is, and I do not understand. Use them from day one. Trying beats still silence each time.

**Example.** No hablo español means I do not speak Spanish. It asks them to slow down or find new ways. Say it with a smile and pair it with pointing. Honest starters gain most help.

Je ne parle pas français means I do not speak French. Keep it for shops, stations and trips. Add please in their tongue and doors swing wide. Small soft words hold great weight.

**Tip.** Lost the exact word. Point, act it out, or take a plainer word. Ask for slower speech or one more listen. Never freeze. Keep going.
