# Following Media Without Subtitles

## Ready when they can

- Follow the plot of an episode or the point of a podcast without subtitles
- Pick the thread back up after a stretch that was not understood
- Choose material where enough is understood to stay with it for half an hour

## Lesson: Watching without subtitles

Pick material you can already half follow. Choose shows where you hold the plot for about half an hour at a time. Start with episodes you have seen before, so the known story works as a safety net for unknown words. Comfort first, challenge second.

Stretches will pass you by, and that is normal. Stay calm and ride them out. Watch faces, actions, and tone to hold the thread, then lock back on when familiar words return. Rewatching one tricky scene twice teaches more than ten new scenes watched once.

**Example.** Treat one episode like a lesson. Pause to repeat a good line aloud and steal useful phrases into a notebook. Flood your week with listening: episodes, podcasts, and songs in the language. One episode mined well beats a whole season half heard.

**Tip.** Reading feeds listening. Books give you the same high value words at your own pace, with time to notice. Read the book behind a series, or look up its names and places first. Aim for the plot and the point, and let missing words fill in over weeks.
