# Formal and Informal: Choosing Register

One language holds several ways of saying the same thing, and the wrong one lands as rude or as stiff. Learn what the new language marks: forms of address, verb forms, word choice, and how much can be left out.

## Lesson: Sounding right for the moment

Register is the formality level you choose for the moment. The wrong one lands as rude or as stiff. Romanian greets strangers with buna ziua and friends with servus or ciao. Before you speak, ask how well you know the reader and what sounding rude would cost. When in doubt, go one step more formal.

You can hear register in small signals. Formal means polite pronouns or titles, full forms instead of contractions, and a proper greeting with a closing. Informal means first names, slang, contractions, and short or missing greetings. Korean is formal with eomeoni in public and warm with eomma at home.

**Example.** Turn Hi, give me the notes into Good morning. Could you please send me the notes. First hunt down slang and short forms, like gonna or lots of. Then add a proper greeting, a modal like could you, and please with a closing.

**Tip.** New situations with strangers call for formal, such as meeting an exchange partner's parents. Arabic suits news and school with Modern Standard forms and jokes with dialect. Many languages give you two words for you, one for respect and one for closeness, so every sentence declares its register.
