# Keeping a Conversation Going

Hold your end of a conversation: take turns, buy time while you think, ask for a repeat, and repair a sentence that went wrong halfway. These moves keep a conversation alive, not perfect sentences.

## Ready when they can

- Use a holding phrase instead of falling silent while thinking
- Ask a follow-up question that keeps the other person talking
- Restart a sentence that went wrong and finish it

## Lesson: Keep the rally going

A chat is a rally, not a speech. Your job is to keep the ball flying back. Ask open questions that need more than yes or no, and follow up on details the other person gives. React to their words before adding your own news. That back and forth keeps both sides in play.

**Example.** Picture the silence after your sentence lands. Instead of freezing, use a holding phrase like Let me think or Good question while you plan ahead. Then hand back the turn: ask about them, or link on with That reminds me. Calm fillers sound natural, long frozen pauses do not.

Sentences will crack halfway, and that is normal. Stop, restart the sentence cleanly and finish it. Everyone restarts sometimes. Short repairs beat long apologies: fix the line, keep your turn, and let the talk roll on.

**Tip.** Listen first, then shape your line. Wait for a pause, connect your words to what was just said, and keep your own stories short so turns stay even. People remember good listeners longer than good talkers, so feed the rally before you star in it.
