## Lesson: Keeping your language alive

An unused language fades, so decide your contact before classes end. Pick something you honestly enjoy: a podcast on the commute, messages with a friend, ten minutes of reading before bed. The method matters less than the routine, so fix it to a time of day and protect it like training. Vague someday plans fade while fixed slots survive. App taps alone cannot keep speaking, which needs its own weekly slot.

Know what time attacks first. Without use, rare words and fine grammar fade fastest, and producing sentences under pressure rusts quickly. Everyday phrases, basic patterns, and listening hold out longest. Aim your maintenance where fading hits hardest instead of rehearsing what already stays.

Speaking stays alive only through speaking, so keep one weekly slot you cannot cancel: a club, a tandem partner, or a tutor call. Reading and apps keep recognition warm but never replace producing sentences on the spot. Record yourself once a month on the same topic, so you can hear whether fluency holds or slips.

Measure with a public ruler. Check yourself against CEFR can-do statements for listening, reading, speaking, and writing, and record the level per skill. Retest about twice a year on the same tasks, keep the old scores, and aim the next months at your weakest skill.
