## Ready when they can

- Finish a full-length work in the new language and discuss it in that language
- Handle older or literary wording without abandoning the text
- Point to something in the original that a translation cannot carry over

## Lesson: Reading books as first readers did

A whole book in the new tongue is won in three sweeps. First chase the plot and let strange words blur past. Next slow for turns of phrase. Last weigh the ideas worth a talk.

**Example.** Keep a plain log as you go: names, key turns, and lines you love. That log turns into your script for a talk in the tongue itself. End plus talk marks the true win.

Older or bookish words yield to use. Meet them in live scenes three times and they stick. Look up just the words that block the road, and lean on the tale around the rest.

**Tip.** What the first tongue gives is what no swap keeps. Jokes, chimes, and twin-sense live in the first words alone. Set one page beside its swap to spot what fell away.
