# Reading a Whole Story in a New Language

Read something longer than a caption: a short book or story written for learners, from start to finish. The skill is holding the thread while some words stay unknown.

## Ready when they can

- Finish a short book in the new language and retell what happened
- Read past an unknown word and pick up its sense from the story
- Choose material at a level where most of the words are already known

## Lesson: Read the Whole Story

Pick a story where you already know most of the words. Then the few new words cannot stop you.

When you meet a word you do not know, keep reading. The sentences around it often tell you what it means.

**Example.** Mina reads one short book to the end. At each chapter end she retells what happened in two sentences, like replaying a film in her head.

**Tip.** Close the book at each chapter end and say what happened in two sentences. If you cannot, read that part once more.

**Recap.** Choose a book you mostly follow, read past new words, and retell each chapter in two sentences.
