# Translation as a Craft

## Ready when they can

- Produce two defensible translations of one passage for different readers
- Name what was lost in a translation and why it could not be kept
- Interpret a short exchange live, holding the sense while the speaker continues

## Lesson: Carrying sense across tongues

Each translation serves two people: the first writer and the new reader. Staying close to the first words can sound stiff to the new reader. What pleases one may strain the other.

**Example.** Draft one page twice: once glued to the first words, once tuned to the new ear. Then list what each draft gave up. Each draft fits its own reader and use.

Name each loss and its cause. Wordplay, ranks of politeness, and beat often lack a twin form, so some facet must yield. Line-by-line checks bare each shift and its push.

Live speech grants no pause. Hold the sense while the voice runs on, then rebuild it fast in the other tongue. Tool drafts give rough sense in a flash; craft means mending tone, jokes, and rites by hand.
