## Lesson: One language, many voices

English is not one fixed thing. It shifts across regions, groups, and settings, from street slang to formal prose. Noticing those shifts is your first step toward using language on purpose instead of by habit.

Take two regional varieties. Cockney was born in East London and plays with rhyme, rhythm, and cheeky word swaps that outsiders must decode. Scots and Scottish English carry centuries of history in everyday words for greetings, food, weather, and banter. A dialect is not broken English. It is English with local rules.

What counts as correct is a judgement about people as much as grammar. Schools, dictionaries, media, and official bodies push one prestige form while speakers keep local ways alive. Skilled speakers match variety to reader: a chat with friends allows local color that an application letter should skip.

**Example.** Study a new variety like a field researcher. Learn the classic examples, listen to real speakers, and note how context changes meaning. Copy local greetings, try phrases with the accent in mind, and ask when unsure. Respect turns imitation into connection, while mockery breaks it.
