# Writing in a New Language

Write phrases from memory in a new language and adapt them to make new sentences; describe people, places, things and actions in writing, using familiar vocabulary and simple structures to express ideas clearly

## Ready when they can

- Write memorised phrases correctly without copying (e.g. writing 'me gusta el fútbol' from memory)
- Swap words in a known sentence pattern to say something new (e.g. turning 'I have a dog' into 'I have two cats')
- Write a few sentences describing a person or place (e.g. a short description of their family for a pen pal)

## Lesson: Writing Words You Already Know

You already know how to say and read words in your new language. Writing is the next step. When you write from memory, you build the sentence yourself, without copying it from a book or a friend.

**Example.** Priya learned the phrase 'me gusta el fútbol,' which means 'I like soccer.' She closes her book, thinks about the words, and writes the whole phrase herself. She does not peek at the page while she writes.

*(drawing: The pattern stays the same, but you can swap the last part to say something new, like 'I have two cats.')*

**Tip.** When you swap one word in a sentence you already know, you get a brand new sentence for free. You do not need to write a whole new one from scratch.

**Recap.** Write phrases from memory, swap in new words to build new sentences, and describe people and places with simple sentences of your own.
