# Judging How Well You Actually Know It

Feeling fluent while reading is not the same as being able to produce it later, and the gap between them is where most revision is wasted. Calibration is checking that your confidence tracks your actual performance.

## Ready when they can

- Predict a score before a self-test and compare it with the result
- Explain why material that feels easy while reading is often the least well learned
- Name two checks that give an honest signal rather than a comfortable one

## Lesson: Can you tell what you really know

Your feeling of knowing is a faulty meter. Pages that glide by feel learned, but the glide comes from the author's clarity, not your memory. The only honest meter is retrieval. Close the book and produce the idea yourself. Predict your score before each self-test, then compare it with the result. The gap between prediction and performance shows how much your meter lies.

**Example.** Maya predicts 8 out of 10 before a quiz, then scores 5. She does not argue with the gap. She reads it as proof her feeling lied, so she drops rereading and switches to recall practice. Two weeks later she predicts 6 and scores 6. Her meter is now honest.

Material that feels easy while reading is often the least well learned. Reading builds recognition, but exams demand recall, and the two are different skills. Rereading, recopying and marathon sessions all score low in research. Replace them with three moves that add useful difficulty. Space sessions across days, test yourself constantly, and mix problem types. Sleep consolidates what you studied, so short focused blocks with rest beat drowned evenings.

**Tip.** End each study block with a routine. Write everything you remember on a blank page, then check it against your notes. Explain hard ideas aloud as if teaching a friend. Where words fail, learning has not happened yet. Then reflect in writing. Note what you can now do, what still breaks, and what you will try differently. Keep a small log of method, prediction and result.

**Recap.** Calibration means predicting your score, testing, and shrinking the gap.
