# Protecting One Block of Attention

A plan works only if the blocks in it are real. Cut the interruptions before the block starts, run one task for a set time, and have a rule ready for the moment you get stuck.

## Ready when they can

- Set up a block by naming the one task, the length, and what gets switched off
- Explain the cost of switching tasks: the minutes spent getting back to where they were
- State their own stuck rule (try for a set time, write the question down, move on, come back to it)

## Lesson: Guard one block of focus

Start each block with a setup ritual. Name the one task, set a timer for its length, and switch everything else off. Phone face down or in another room, extra tabs closed, and music with lyrics off.

Tell the people around you the block exists. A closed door, headphones on, or a busy until six note stops most interruptions before they happen. Guarding the edges matters as much as the work inside.

**Example.** You sit down for forty minutes on mole calculations with one tab open and the phone away. Midway the urge to check messages hits, so you jot it on a parked list and return to the task. One finished task in forty minutes beats two half finished ones.

**Tip.** Keep a stuck rule ready. Try for a set time, write the exact question down in one sentence, move on, and come back later. End the block with a two minute review of what finished and what the next block starts with.

**Recap.** Name one task, guard its edges, keep the block single, and hold a stuck rule ready before you begin.
