# Teaching It Back

After learning something new, explain it in your own words — to yourself, a family member, or even a toy

## Ready when they can

- Explain a concept they've learned to someone else in their own words, not just repeating what the teacher said
- After teaching something to a friend or sibling, identify a gap in their own understanding that they only noticed through explaining
- Summarise a lesson by pretending to teach it back, using examples they made up themselves

## Lesson: Teaching It Back

After you learn something new, try saying it back in your own words, not the exact words you heard. Tell a parent, a friend, or even a stuffed animal. If you can explain it simply, you really understand it.

*(drawing: The teach-it-back steps: learn it, say it your way, add your own example, then notice what's still fuzzy.)*

**Example.** Zara learns that bees carry pollen from flower to flower. Instead of repeating her teacher's sentence, she tells her dog: bees visit flowers for sweet stuff, and pollen sticks to their fuzzy legs and rubs off on the next flower. Partway through, she notices she is not sure why pollen helps make new plants, so now she knows exactly what to ask about.

**Tip.** If you get stuck while teaching something back, that is not a bad sign. It shows you exactly which part to go learn better.

**Recap.** Explaining it in your own words, with your own example, shows you what you really know and what still needs work.
