## Ready when they can

- Ask 'why?' or 'how does that work?' about something they've been told, rather than just accepting it
- Explain the reason behind a rule or method — e.g. 'We carry the ten because 13 ones is the same as 1 ten and 3 ones'
- Show deeper understanding by connecting a new idea to something they already know — e.g. 'Oh, that's like when we...'

## Lesson: Asking Why It Works

There are two ways to know something. You can know THAT it is true, or you can know WHY it is true. Anyone can repeat a fact. Understanding means you can explain the reason behind it.

*(drawing: 13 ones split into 1 group of ten and 3 leftover ones. That is why we carry the ten.)*

**Example.** When Mia adds 8 + 5, she gets 13 ones. She asks why she writes down a 3 and carries a 1. The reason: 13 ones is the same as 1 ten and 3 ones, so the ten moves to the next column.

**Tip.** Next time you learn a rule, ask yourself 'why does that work?' or 'how do you know?' The answer often connects to something you already understand, like grouping ten pennies into a dime.

**Recap.** Knowing why turns a fact you memorized into something you truly understand.
