Open with the exact role, match two or three of your wins to the advert line by line, and close by asking for the interview. Keep the letter under a page and cut every sentence the employer already knows from your CV. Short, specific and keen beats long and generic. **Example.** Two adverts want the same school leaver for different jobs: one stresses till speed, the other stresses shelves and stock. You send two different CVs. The first leads with checkout shifts and queue times you measured. The second leads with restocking evenings and counts of bays faced. Same person, same history, different mirror held up to each advert. Employers check fit in the first minute from the top third of the first page: your target role and proof. Build the CV to serve that glance: contact details, a two-line summary, then experience newest first with bullet wins that carry numbers. Save and send as PDF so the layout survives every computer, and name the file with your name and the role. Tough questions test how you think: name a strength the job needs and prove it fast, name a real weakness plus the fix you run, and tell failures in three beats ending on what changed. **Tip.** Choose references who have actually watched you work, always ask permission first, then send each referee the advert, your CV and the deadline before any call. A surprised referee gives a flat answer, and a flat answer costs offers.
