# Credit Files and What Lenders See

Every borrowing decision made about you rests on a file you did not write and can inspect. Small habits build it, and a few specific events damage it for years.

## Ready when they can

- Name three things that appear on a credit file and how long each stays
- Explain why having no history can be treated much like a bad history
- Describe how to check your own file and what to do about an error on it

## Lesson: Know what lenders see about you

A credit report is your money CV. Every loan, card and missed payment is collected in one file, and lenders read it before offering credit. They price their offer from what they see. A clean file means cheaper borrowing, while a messy one means refusals or steep rates. You are allowed to see your own file, and you should.

**Example.** You request your free report and read it line by line: personal details, accounts, balances and payment history. One entry shows a missed payment you actually made on time, so you dispute it in writing with your statement as evidence. Next month the entry is corrected, and the file once again describes the real you.

No history can count much like bad history. Lenders cannot see your reliability in a thin file, so they treat silence like risk and lend little and dear. Two facts surprise most people. Checking your own file never harms your score, while closing your oldest card can shorten your history and dip it. Salary and savings matter to lenders but never appear in the score itself.

**Tip.** Scores rise on boring habits: pay every bill on time, keep card balances low, and stay put financially. Register to vote where you live, since lenders check that too, and avoid bursts of new applications, which look desperate. What drags scores down is equally plain: late payments, defaults and heavy card use. There is no quick trick, only months of steady behaviour.

**Recap.** Your file is your money CV, so read it, fix it, and feed it steady habits.
