# Doing It Right When Nobody Is Watching

A small business runs on promises kept when breaking them would be easier and cheaper. Reputation is the only asset a young venture actually has.

## Ready when they can

- Describe a case where the profitable choice and the honest one differ, and say what you would do
- Explain why exaggerating what a product does costs more than it gains over a year
- Name one thing a small seller owes a customer even without a written contract

## Lesson: Honest selling when no one checks

Honesty pays slowly and cheating pays fast, which is exactly the trap. A seller who hides a flaw makes one quick sale but loses every repeat customer. An honest seller may lose that sale yet win ten later through trust.

**Example.** Say your batch of soap came out pale instead of bright blue. Selling it as bright blue earns today and refunds tomorrow, plus bad reviews and a dead reputation. Pointing out the pale colour may lose one sale and win ten later customers.

When profit and honesty clash, name both sides out loud: what the dishonest choice gains this week and what it costs this year. Trust is built by doing what you say, keeping promises, and fixing mistakes fast with a fix, not an excuse.

**Tip.** Even with no written contract, a small seller owes the customer what was promised: the real item, on time, as described. Describe products exactly as they are and deliver when you said you would.
